Steve Greenberg Mourns The End Of CBS 27

By Esther Cheeseboro

Steven Greenberg has been the President of Community School Board 27 and was a member before taking the chair. All in all, Greenberg has 13 years of service to the board.

Now, he is looking at the end of an era.

Greenberg will be presiding over the last meeting CSB 27 ever on Thursday, June 17.

He believes that CSB 27 has provided an important and necessary benefit to the community over the years. He is also aware that the new Comm

unity Education Council, which will replace the board on July 1, will not be beneficial to the parents as well as school children.

"I’ve met the new council, they seem nice" says Greenberg, "The Department of Education won’t make sure that they’re successful in doing what they should do and may even make it difficult for them to do the job they think they should be doing."

The members of the new Community Education Council have participated in orientation and training to prepare them to begin their term on

July 1.

Only one of the new members of the council Matthew Regan from P.S. 114, will represent Rockaway. This council may not give attention to many issues that Greenberg believed the board solved in his 13-year tenure.

"The Community Board carried an open process, and has done nothing behind closed doors. We’ve gotten kids to attend their neighborhood schools, added a gifted program, and made an attempt to put a school in Rockaway that could be one of the best in New York City" Greenberg says.

Greenberg has many memories of

his time at the board. He will miss meeting the educators, the care the CSB staff had for the children, his disagreements with the board and still being able to come to a final agreement with a laugh about it afterwards.

The final Open Calendar meeting of CSB 27 will be held at M.S 198 (365 Beach 56 street). Greenberg appreciates the community’s involvment in the schools and hopes that "the parents of District 27 continue to be an instrumental force in the lives of their children.
