Dr. Horowitz Becomes A Bioethicist

Dr. Horowitz Becomes A Bioethicist

Dr. Ernest Horowitz received the degree of M.S. in Bioethics on Thursday, May 27 at the graduation exercises of Albany Medical College held in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The degree was conferred by the AMC and the Graduate College of Union University. Five people were graduated in this first class and became known as "bioneers." The course of study included health care policy, reproductive ethics, research ethics, law and the casuistry of end-of-life and beginning-of-life situations.

Horowitz’s master’s thesis was entitled "Closing the Gap: Strategies to Place Comprehensible and Useful Advance Directives on Patient Charts: Adoption of the Polst-Plus Document." His paper suggest that everyone should have an advanced directive (a type of living will) filed with his/her doctor, family and hospital, and it should be a six preference, easy to understand, easily identifiable document which could be mandated by the government, one’s insurance carrier or doctor group.

The plan would reduce stress during the worst times for a patient, family and physician and empower the same groups while possibly saving money for institutions and the medical system.
