It was a very moving experience to attend the Memorial Day observance on the Intrepid Museum. To begin with my first experience on the Intrepid Museum was an eerie one. I could almost feel the presence of the souls who died there……. a very fitting place, indeed. Col. Tom Tyrell, USMC (Ret) Exc. Dir./CEO of the Air Space Museum was Master of Ceremonies followed by Armed Forces Color Guard, National Anthem, Invocation and Remarks by several, but Honorable Alan G. Hevesi, State of New York Comptroller, was most noted when he spoke of our life today and the preservation of our Freedom of Religion, Speech, Press." No nation in the world," he said, can people enjoy our way of life and pursuit of career and happiness. "Deep thanks must go to our men and women in the service fighting today and those we have lost in all the wars. Mayor Bloomberg extended his sympathies to the families who lost loved ones and he and the other dignitaries cast five ceremonial wreaths representing those who died in five wars and in New York upon the Hudson River while a huge flag was placed by many over symbolic coffins. Three volleys were shot, the dual taps were played and above us the roar of the missing man formation as it flew over. A closing prayer and the sound of "America" from the Navy Region Band left few of us dried eyed……….. And, now our extraordinary heroes are only memory,……… a memory we will hold dear in our hearts forever.…….. .. .
