Lone Rockaway Representative on New CEC

By Howard Schwach

The results of the recently-held election process for nine parent members of the District 27 Community Education Councils (CEC) are in and only one Rockaway resident has made the cut.

The CEC’s will replace the Community School Boards that have been in place for many years.

The lone Rockaway resident on the new education council is Matthew Regan, whose child is enrolled at PS 114 in Belle Harbor.

The councils were elected by the top three officers of each parent association in the district, although the Department of Education has said that only half of those eligible to vote in the process did so.

The other parents elected to the local council (with their school affiliations) are: Anthony Allia (PS 207), Brendy Belony (affiliation not given), Chryll Crews ((MS 210), Maria Hoschhauser (PS 146), Maritza Porrata (PS 63), Tim Poulos (PS 63), Kery-Ann Venturas ((PS 232) and Kathleen Willsen (PS 232).

Two more voting members of the community council will be chosen by Borough President Helen Marshall and a non-voting student member will be chosen by Regional Supervisor Kathleen Cashin.

At press time there was a report that Borough President Marshall had appointed current Community School Board 27 member David Hooks of Far Rockaway to the new panel, which would mean some representation for the eastern end of the peninsula.

The new council will have its first meeting in July.

The outgoing Community School Board 27 will host an "End of An Era Farewell Dinner" at Pier 92 in Rockaway at 8 p.m. on June 17 after a quick final meeting at Middle School 198 in Arverne.
