Bicycle Classic At Rockaway On June 6

The first annual Rockaway Beach Classic Bicycle Race, sponsored by Arverne by the Sea, will be held on the peninsula on June 6, according to an announcement by Team Squiggle and the United States Cycling Foundation (USCF).

The day will include a series of races, all sanctioned by the USCF. All of the races will begin and end at Beach 73 Street, between Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Shore Front Parkway.

The longest race of the day will be the Pro 1,2,3 race, which will be 20 laps around the course.

The course takes riders from Beach 73 Street, on Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Beach 69 Street, then to the boardwalk to Beach 82 Street before coming back to Shore Front Parkway and to Beach 73 Street.

The racecourse is designed by 100 Precinct Community Affairs Police Officer Kenneth Beecher.

Other races held that day include a Cat 3,4 race (10 laps), a juniors’ race for those between 15 and 18 years of age (8 laps), a masters race for those over the age of 35 (12 laps) and a race for women (10 laps).

In addition, there will be community races that are not sanctioned by the USCF.

While the winners of the sanctioned races win cash and trophies, the winners of the community races will be presented with a bicycle.

The race for those aged 10 to 12 and for those aged 13 to 15 will be three blocks long.

The race for those 16 to 18 will be 1 lap and those who are 18 and above will race over three laps.

Each lap of the racecourse is 1.9 miles over flat terrain.

Race coordinators warn all riders, professional and amateur alike that they must wear helmets.

Those interested in signing up for any of the races should contact the organization at avd@panix.conm. There will be registration on the morning of the races as well.
