"Emerging" is an exhibition of small luminous oil pastels and larger abstract oil paintings by Christina Sarquiz. They explore fictitious landscapes through subtle color harmonies and invite the viewer into their search for balance, depth and emerging forms. The Rockaway Artists Alliance presents this exhibition in partnership with the National Park Service/ Gateway National Recreation Area from June 5-June 27, 2004 at sTudio 6 Gallery in the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Gateway National Recreation Area/Fort Tilden, Rockaway, Queens, NY. The wine and cheese reception is to be held on Saturday, June 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Saturday, 12-5 and Sundays 1-4, as well as by appointment.

Since she began painting in 1992, Sarquiz has always been drawn to the elements of abstraction. "I am primarily concerned with the exploration of color: the layering, the intricacies, the transparencies, and the luminosities that are subtly revealed. Within this exploration, I am drawn to the possibilities of infinite landscape and the structures and plasticity that the colors can create."

Sarquiz received her B.F.A from Brooklyn College, CUNY and is the recent recipient of a Fellowship Award from the Vermont Studio Center. She currently teaches Art in a NYC Public School in Brooklyn, N.Y.

As you know, RAA is renovating sTudio 7 Gallery. Out with the old – well, at least some of it. Saturday, May 29 from 12 to 5 PM and Sunday, May 30 from 1 to 4 PM RAA is holding a "yART Sale" in and around the gallery in Fort Tilden. Items, such as frames and used furniture, will be available for a donation to RAA. Come find a treasure and donate to a worthy organization at the same time. All are welcome.

"Nunsense" is that funny musical being presented by the Rockaway Theatre Company June 4 through June 19 at the Post Theater in Fort Tilden. It is the story of five nuns who put on an evening’s entertainment to raise funds for…well, let’s just say, an appropriate farewell to their sisters. It was written by Dan Goggin and is directed by Peggy Page. Rockaway Theatre Company and the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, in partnership with Gateway National Recreation Area, invite you to a special 7 PM performance on Saturday, June 5. The performance of "Nunsense" will be followed by a Gala Champagne Cocktail Party in building T-149. Featured will be hot and cold hors d’oevres, decadent desserts, free-flowing champagne and a vow-of-silence auction. You can dance to the big band sounds of Walt and the Family Jewels. There will be raffles and prizes. Tickets are $40. Reservations are limited so respond now. Log onto the RTC website for details: www. rockawaytheatrecompany.org. I am very close to Reverend Mother (she’s like a sister to me). She says not to miss it. Performance dates are Friday, June 4, 11, 18 at 8 PM; Saturday, June 5 at 7 PM; June 12 and 19 at 8 PM; Sunday, June 13 at 2 PM; Thursday, June 17 at 8 PM. For ticket prices and further information, log onto the RTC website.
