Cops were called to investigate a second break-in and attempted burglary at the same two businesses on Beach 116 Street this week, police said.

Someone has twice broken into the Beach Cleaner, at 238 Beach 116 Street, in a failed attempt to burglarize the adjoining A&J Jewelry store. Police said the perp entered the cleaners through a skylight and tried to gain access to A&J’s safe. Neither business has an alarm.

The attempts were reported on April 25 and May 18. Police think the latest break-in happened over last weekend.

The wannabe crook has caused property damage but has been an unsuccessful jewel thief so far. "He’s striking out," said one police source. "The place is very secure."

Arlene Augustine, the manager of A&J Jewelry, agreed that the odds are stacked against whoever is trying to burgle her store.

"I guess they thought they could open the back of the safe…" Augustine said. "They can’t. It’s a special jewelry safe."

Meanwhile, two other businesses in that area reported break-ins over the weekend as well. Employees at Nail Country and Mr. Rocco’s Unisex Hair Salon say someone entered their stores, caused minor damage and stole loose change and some hardware. Rocco Ritorto told The Wave that he thinks more police are needed at night to "keep an eye on Beach 116 Street."

Detectives from the 100 Precinct are investigating.
