Girls Tennis

After winning their first round matchup against EBC Bushwick last Friday, the Beach Channel Dolphins could not keep their winning streak intact as they fell to Boys and Girls in the second round of the playoffs.

Tiffanie Parchment won the lone singles victory for Beach Channel, who finished the year at 7-5. Parchment’s season is not over as she will compete in the second round of the PSAL Singles Championships. Amanda Lang will also compete in the tournament, which will take place on May 17 at Queens College.

Boys Tennis

Murry Bergtraum defeated Beach Channel in the first round of the PSAL Playoffs 3-2. In the PSAL Singles Championships, Timothy Ranchatesingh advanced to the second round by defeating Michael Kirton of Wingate High School. Gabriel Martinez lost a close 10-8 decision and in doubles, Sebastian Stefaniak and Jahvis Ferguson advanced to play on May 18 in the second round of the doubles championships.

Softball

Stella Maris fell short in their quest to win the CHSAA Brooklyn/ Queens championship by falling to Bishop Kearney 4-1 last Tuesday. Belle Harbor’s Jennifer Pomponio pitched a 2 hit, 11-strikeout for Kearney. The Tigers battled against Archbishop Molloy after the newspaper went to press. Molloy defeated Bishop Loughlin, 1-0. Kearney’s overall record is now at 22-1 and Molloy is at 13-4.

Volleyball

The Dolphins gave a great effort but fell in their quest to qualify for the playoffs by losing to Hillcrest 25-22 last Tuesday. Beach Channel finished in third place with a 9-4 record. Hillcrest defeated the Dolphins in the tiebreaker game within the division to advance to the PSAL playoffs. Though they do not advance, the Dolphins have a lot to be proud of according to head coach Mark Sanchez.

"I want them to take the hard work they did in practice and in games and apply that to their lives," Sanchez says about a team that will graduate seven seniors.

Baseball

Beach Channel improved to 9-3 and second place in Queens South B with a 5-0 victory over Thomas Edison. Far Rockaway fell to a 3-8 record with a loss to Springfield Gardens, 6-5.

Soccer

Far Rockaway can clinch an over .500 season with a win today at 4p.m. against Van Buren. At 6-5, the Seahorses will likely make the playoffs. They will find out their first round opponent when the PSAL decides the seeding matchups

The Dolphins won their first two games of the season by winning back-to-back games over Robert F. Wagner, 3-1 and 4-1 respectively. Antonek Trought scored four goals in two games against Wagner.

Other Notes

Natalie DeSanctis, a senior at Stella Maris High School, will be attending Southhampton College on an athletic scholarship this coming fall. DeSanctis, a four-year starter on the Varsity Basketball team, finished her high school career with over 1,000 points and 300 assists.

Natalie also served as team captain for her junior and senior years. This past season, the team finished 16-0 in League competition and repeated as Diocesan "B" Champions. A three-time MVP, DeSanctis has been highlighted in Newsday as their scholar-athlete of the week.
