Beach 105 Street Mailbox Torched

Beach 105 Street Mailbox Torched

Postal officials have contacted The Wave to alert west end residents that a mailbox at Beach 105 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard was firebombed on Sunday, May 9 at approximately 5:26 p.m.

"We want to let everybody who put mail into that box from 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, the last pickup from the box, until Sunday afternoon that their mail was incinerated," says Scott Klein, a spokesperson for the Far Rockaway Post Office. "Most of what was in the box is so badly burned that you can’t even tell that it’s mail."

Klein and Postmaster George Buonocore want to alert residents who placed bill payments with checks in that box that their mail might not be deliverable.

"We urge everybody who posted mail in that box during the weekend to check with their credit companies and utilities to make sure their payment was received," Klein said.

Susan Blake, a spokesperson from the FDNY said that the fire was put out on Sunday at 5:26 p.m.

Agents from the U.S. Postal Police are investigating the fire, which is considered to be arson.
