Witnesses helped police bust two men who are accused of torching a Jeep in Arverne recently – but the cops could have just followed their noses.

"They smelled like they bathed in gasoline," one officer said of the Brooklyn men arrested in what cops are calling "a classic insurance job." The men allegedly torched a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Beach 67 Street and Larkin Avenue last Tuesday at about 9:30 p.m.

Andrew Siberon, 19, and Roberto Acevedo, 42, set the Jeep on fire and then fled to the Beach 67 Street subway station to make their getaway, but neighbors, alarmed by the flames and the explosion that followed, called 911, police said. Officers from the 100 Precinct Anti-Crime Unit and other officers who were flagged down by witnesses on the street, caught up to Siberon and Acevedo as they tried to beat the heat, and one of the men had the keys and registration to the Jeep in his pocket, police said.

The Jeep is insured by Siberon’s brother, Dennis Siberon Jr., of Freehold, New Jersey. He has not been charged with any wrongdoing in connection with the incident.

Siberon and Acevedo are charged with first degree criminal mischief and arson, and could spend up to 25 years in prison if convicted, according to Nicole Navas, a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. Siberon faces an additional insurance fraud charge.
