Attention Deficit Workshop at M.S. 53

Attention Deficit Workshop at M.S. 53

Attendance Improvement Dropout Prevention facilitator Ken Yanek hosted an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) workshop at M.S. 53 on April 22. Parents were invited to attend so that they can better understand the illness.

Presenter and school psychologist Amy Reip discussed the disease which was first studied in the early 1950’s. Reip listed basic symptoms and early detection which can be done as early as age 3.

Different treatments of ADHD were highlighted, which include medication and environmental rearrangement. Many ADHD students have a high degree of intelligence, but demonstrate problems with focusing and are prone to distractions from their immediate surroundings.

Parents were quick to talk about their problems with their ADHD children with both the presenter and Principal Ken Graham. By providing workshops like this one, Graham hopes to help parents by allowing them access to resources.
