RDRC To Administer Summer Youth Program

RDRC To Administer Summer Youth Program

Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) will be administering the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).

This year things are going to be a little different from previous year’s programs. As recently as last year, the New York City Department of Employment administered the SYEP, but with the demise of DOE (Adult programs were rolled into the City’s Human Resources Administration and the Department of Small Business Services and Youth programs rolled into the Department of Youth and Community Development), this years’ SYEP program will be administered by DYCD and the effective date of the program will be from July 6, 2004 until August 13, 2004.

In preparation for this years’ program, RDRC is working with DYCD in order to provide employment opportunities to 600 youth, ages 14-21. Even though New York City is confronting budget cuts and shortfalls, RDRC and other organizations that will be administering the program during the summer are hoping that full funding for the program is restored quickly so that there will not be any interruption of program service for the young people participating in the program.

Some important highlights and differences with this years’ program are:

Youth participants will work five (5) days per week (Monday through Friday) instead of the previous four days per week and they will work a total of thirty (30) hours per week.

The rate of pay will be $5.15 per hour (minimum wage).

Participants will receive a debit card, instead a check, which will be used at certain financial institutions (to be determined by DYCD) in order to receive their pay.

Each summer youth employee will participate in twenty (20) hours of an educational component that encompasses Program orientation, Workplace readiness, Financial literacy, Health education, Higher education exploration, Career exploration, Reflection and an analysis of the SYEP and educational choices for the future

In previous years, SYEP participants had to be employed in not-for-profit organizations only, however, this year RDRC and other SYEP administering agencies can place up to ten percent (10%) of our participants in "for profit" organizations/companies.

Just as in previous years, all program participants will be selected by lottery that will be administered by DYCD. Applications for the SYEP are now available at RDRC’s offices at 1920 Mott Avenue, 2nd Floor, Far Rockaway, NY 11691. For any additional information, you may call at (718) 327-5300.
