101 Precinct CO Gives Safety Tips

101 Precinct CO Gives Safety Tips

"Recently, there has been a slight increase in unattended items being removed without the owner’s permission," says Captain Walter Salowsky, the commanding officer of the 101 Precinct in Far Rockaway. "These items are often taken from unlocked automobiles and while personal property is left unattended at work or while shopping. Many times the theft of these items leads to theft of your identity. Once your identity is captured by a criminal, it could take months to correct the credit related problems associated with this crime."

Captain Salowsky, who took over the precinct a few months ago, provides a few tips that will help people keep their property safe from those who prey on the unwary: Always lock your car and take all valuables out of the auto while parked (even if the car is in your driveway!).

Never leave your car running while unattended, even for "just a few minutes"

NEVER leave property in the passenger compartment of your vehicle, while it is unattended. This includes glove compartments and center consoles.

Secure your property while at work. DO NOT leave your personal property unattended at work. Items can be taken from your desk, coat and other places that you think are "safe".

While shopping always keep your valuables on your person. DO NOT leave your wallet on a counter while signing a charge slip and do not leave your pocketbook in your shopping cart.

Secure your credit card numbers and insure that any web site used for a purchase is secure.

Follow your common sense, follow our simple tips and keep possession of what’s yours.

"We at the 101 Precinct offer free security surveys for your home or business," the commanding officer says. "If you are interested in a security survey please contact Police Officer Jan Silverberg at 718.868.3426 to set up an appointment."
