SJEH To Host Uninsured Health Enrollment Fair

SJEH To Host Uninsured Health Enrollment Fair

A National "Cover the Uninsured Week Health and Enrollment Fair" will be held on Saturday, May 15, from 11 am to 4 pm at Ocean Bay Community Center at 57-10 Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway.

The Fair is co-sponsored by the New York City Housing Authority, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, and Healthfirst.

"Gaining access to health care is a critical problem in the Rockaways and Cover the Uninsured Week will help us achieve a healthier community," said Luis A. Hernandez, Chief Executive Officer of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. "We want to raise awareness that assistance is available for people without health insurance who qualify."

The Health and Enrollment Fair will offer the opportunity for community residents to speak with knowledgeable enrollers about Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and other health insurance opportunities. In addition free health screenings will be offered for cholesterol, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, podiatry and vision.
Entertainment will include family fun activities including a moonbounce and face painting. At 1 pm, the Church of God Christian Academy Choir will perform a medley of spiritual songs. In addition, there will be free popcorn, snacks, refreshments and giveaways. The event will be held rain or shine.

There are nearly 44 million Americans living without health coverage including 8.5 million children. In 2002, the number of people without health coverage increased by more than two million, the largest one-year increase in a decade. Reversing this disturbing trend, elevating this issue on the national and local agendas, educating Americans about the problem, and providing immediate assistance to the uninsured and small business owners are the goals of Cover the Uninsured Week 2004. Former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter are once again serving as Honorary Co-Chairs. For more information about this event, please call SJEH at 718-869-7750.
