City Council To Hold Hearings on Sexual Assault

City Council To Hold Hearings on Sexual Assault

City Council Speaker Gifford Miller and Council member Tracy Boyland, have announced a series of hearings that will examine the effects of sexual assault and violence on a community, the city and nation. The move comes as part of Sexual Assault Awareness month.

"All segments of our population, regardless of race, gender, religion, age or sexual orientation face the complex and long-lasting effects of sexual violence," said Miller. "The hearings that we begin today will look at issues ranging from victims of date rape to adult survivors of sexual abuse and the problems faced by homeless youth. We need to be sensitive to the pain and suffering experienced by survivors, and we need to develop a deeper understanding of the links between sexual violence, the state of legal protections and the availability of services."

Miller concluded, "Sexual violence is costly, both in terms of its emotional toll on survivors, as well as its financial impact borne on society. The Council is committed to addressing sexual violence and finding better solutions to curb these very serious crimes."
