Margert Community Corporation, Rockaway’s local, community-based, nonprofit housing counseling agency and provider of weatherization, rehabilitation, development and other housing related services, has announced that, as of Monday, May 3, 2004, it will shift most of its community service and corporate operations to a prime location in Edgemere.

A long-time resident of the Smith Building, at 19-31 Mott Avenue, Margert will relocate to 325 Beach 37 Street, in a high bungalow sitting right off the corner at Beach Channel Drive. Contact numbers (telephone, fax, email and website) will remain the same.

Equally accessible by car, bus (Q22), commuter van or subway (A train), as well as within easy walking distance for many, the new office location provides a generous waiting area, increased intake space, and private counseling offices to ensure confidentiality. Situated on the St. Gertrude’s "campus," alongside the Fr. Tessier Learning Center (home to Margert’s state-funded Urban Homeownership Center), the site neatly consolidates the agency’s community-based assistance efforts. The move also places Margert on the same block as the Edgemere "urban green space" for which the agency will soon accept responsibility, as well as right next door to an emergency food pantry staffed by parish volunteers.

Margert will retain a downtown presence by continuing to provide service out of Room # 412 at 19-31 Mott Avenue, in the same space they have occupied for the last six years, for both persons with disabilities and those to whom the new location poses a hardship.

"We simply outgrew our space," says executive director Joseph Barden, "and could not really expand efficiently within the Smith Building. A move of this magnitude is difficult for everyone, but we have planned carefully to avoid any disruption in service to the community. By continuing to staff our old office in Room 412, we hope to minimize any inconvenience to our customers during the transitional phase."

"The Board of Directors has long sought to express our commitment to the community in more visible ways," says Rev. Brendan Downing, pastor of St. Gertrude’s and Chairman of the Board. "Our new corporate headquarters will be prominently located on Beach 37th Street and Beach Channel Drive, at the crossroads of the peninsula, and in closer proximity to those in most need of our services. Anyone traveling from one end of the peninsula to the other will pass right by our door, which is always open to our friends and neighbors."
