Bravest And Finest To Be Honored By Chamber

Representatives from the Mayor’s Office, the Fire and Police Commissioners and local elected officials will join the Chamber of Commerce of the Rockaways in honoring eleven heroes from the NYPD, FDNY and EMS who have "gone beyond the call of duty in Rockaway" in the past year, at a luncheon that will be held at the Beach Club on Beach 116 Street on April 27, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

According to a spokesperson for the chamber, the honorees were chosen by their respective superior officers based on "their dedication to their jobs and to our residents and community."

Transit District 23 Police Officers Robert Mallins and Oscar Rivera are being honored for "placing themselves in grave danger to apprehend two robbery and homicide suspects.

Police Officer Nichols Van Dyke of the 101 Precinct in Far Rockaway is being honored not only for his work with the NYPD, but for his service as a U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant who served in the Middle East during the past year.

Battalion Chief Thomas Jordan, a long-time Rockaway resident and a firefighter with more than 25 years of experience has served for many years at the "Big House" on Central Avenue in Far Rockaway.

FDNY Captain Don Mischke has more than 35 years with the department and responded to the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 in Belle Harbor in 2001. His company received a unit citation for its work that day.

Firefighter Arthur Poore is not only a skilled firefighter, but a skilled artist who often performs puppet shows for Rockaway children.

Firefighter Brian Fitzgerald, a Rockaway resident, offers his time and dedication for fundraisers and coaching local children in basketball.

FDNY Captain Karl Kramer of Engine 265 has been awarded many commendations by the department and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

Police Officer Raul Lopez of the 100 Precinct in Rockaway Park has effected 152 arrests in his career, 72 in 2003 alone. He has participated in seizures of narcotics and recovered weapons.

Police Officer Michael Sykora of the 100 Precinct has also effected more than 200 arrests and continues to serve his home community by commanding his local volunteer fire department.

EMTD (Emergency Medical Technician, Defibrillator) DeGiovanni Tumbaco, who has served Rockaway for many years, is the EMS honoree at this year’s luncheon.
