One year ago, the Beach Channel Boys’ Tennis Team embarked on their best season in years, finishing tied 9-1 with Van Buren HS for first place in the PSAL BII Division. They fell just short of the PSAL B Championship Game, losing to Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. With seven of the current ten roster players returning from last year, the team’s core has improved in skill and determination to get back to the playoffs this season.

Under the guidance of Coach John Sullivan, the team has already won four straight matches this season, and look to continue that trend in the upcoming weeks. Beginning the season on the road at August Martin (0-3), the team continued their dominance over the Falcons with a 5-0 win. After postponing matches against Hillcrest and Campus Magnet, the Dolphins traveled to Forest Park, where they defeated John Adam (1-2) by a score of 5-0. Their home opener against Springfield Gardens (2-4) provided the same dominance, with another 5-0 victory. PSAL BII newcomer, Richmond Hill HS (4-2) gave the Dolphins a scare on the road, as Beach Channel barely held on to win 3-2.

So far in the early season, the team is enjoying inspired play all around. Freshman Gary Passik, younger brother of BC Girls’ Tennis Alum Tara Passik, took over the Third Singles spot from Soslan Dambegov, last season’s PSAL leader in aces. Juniors, Timothy Ramchatesingh and Gabriel Martinez held on to their First and Second Singles positions, providing a veteran backbone to the lineup. The doubles teams have provided outstanding teamwork as several members have played a part in key victories over the past four competitions. Jahvis Ferguson, Sebastian Stefaniak, Matthew LaForest, Chris Sevigny, and Norbert Kosobudzki have combined for a perfect 8-0 record for doubles this year. The Reserve corps for the team consists of newcomers Alexis Alicea and William McCarthy.

The team looks to improve on their 9-1 record from last year, and their 4-0 start seems to be a step in the right direction. During the off-season, the PSAL restructured the BII Tennis division, adding Richmond Hill and Hillcrest. Richmond Hill finished 5-5 in Division BI last season. Hillcrest is rejoining Boys Tennis after sitting out the 2003 season—they finished 2-8 in Division BI for 2002. The next match for Beach Channel is on April 15, when they host archrival Martin Van Buren.
