Fisheads Begin Season With Tough Test
This week marks the official opening of the Rockaway Rugby Club’s Spring Season. After a disappointing pre-season tournament last weekend, the Fisheads are looking to get back on track against a formidable opponent. With the fall play-off match (vs. Newport R.I. April 17) looming, the Fisheads are hoping to round into play-off form and continue to build on the success of the Fall 03 campaign. It wont be easy. The locals will make the trek to Danbury Connecticut this week to take on the always-tough Mad Hatter’s Rugby Club. The club derived its name as a tribute to the hat manufacturing industry that has been prominent in the area for well over a century.
The two clubs last met in the spring of 2003 with the Fisheads winning a hard fought match by the count of 17-10. The contest was played at Fort Tilden amidst driving rain, thick mud, and an abundance of "Grouch" McCann imported rocks. Here’s hoping that the weather is fair, the field is rockless, and the result remains the same.
See next week’s Wave for the outcome of what promises to be a punishing game for both teams.A0
