The Rockaway Beach Civic Asso ciation, under fire from many factions in the community for voting to name a local street for a surfing icon rather than for a fallen local firefighter, issued the following press release through its president, Dolores Orr, on Wednesday.

"After meeting with Mrs. Gail Allen, the Rockaway Beach Civic Association will alter our longtime plan to rename Beach 91 Street at Boardwalk, "Duke Kahanamaku Way," for all surfers. Instead, Beach 91 Street will be named in honor of Firefighter Richard Allen, Jr., who lost his life saving others at the WTC on September 11, 2001.

"Although Richie was a Belle Harbor resident he, like so many others, would come to Beach 91 Street in Rockaway Beach to catch the best waves New York City has to offer. His love of surfing at Beach 91 Street is documented in his film SURFING NYC. We do this with honor and out of respect for Mrs. Gail Allen."

Orr will now send a letter to Community Board 14, which will then vote to approve the name change. The community board will then notify City Councilman Joseph Addabbo, who will take the issue to the City Council for final approval.
