Early Spring Training For Little League Kids
Junior High School 180 was the host for the recently completed winter baseball clinic that was conducted by Jimmy Roberts. With help from other coaches, Roberts instructed the children on the fundamentals of playing baseball.
Most of the 25 kids, who ranged from the age of 9-14, will be playing little league baseball in April. The six-week progressive clinic, which took place every Sunday from 9-11 a.m., taught the basics for running, throwing, hitting and catching the ball. The children are told to practice the skills that they have been taught and apply it the next lessons their coaches teach them.
Through the winter months, it is hard for kids to lean and/or maintain their baseball skills. Roberts believes that repetition is a key for baseball players because it takes a lot of practice and time to rid themselves of the improper techniques they may bring to the diamond.
Junior High School 180, with the help of Principal George Giberti, donated his time and efforts to give the clinic the space to conduct the clinic.
"Giberti was great to us and would come out to the clinic in the first few weeks to show up and give us his support", says Paul Mastros, one of the coaches of the clinic. If the kids participate in either the upcoming Rock away Little League or Broad Channel Ath letic Little League, they will have learned the necessary skills to hit it big on the diamond.
