Bishop Kearney JV Creates Exciting Season
Bishop Kearney’s Junior Varsity tea has had a very exciting season, under the leadership of coach Jen Higgins (Belle Harbor) and sophomore captains Diana Canzaneri, Lisa Abitante and Corinne Howley (Belle Harbor)
The excitement this team has created was obvious in their non-league game against St. John’s Villa (S.I.), which they won 72-70 in overtime. When they played Paramus Catholic (N.J.), they won 53-52 and everyone on the bench played and scored! Their games against Bishop Ford saw them way ahead 75-13 and 89-7. They also had a big win over St. Francis Prep, 58-52.
The team also took third place in the Staten Island New Year’s Tournament, beating Curtis, 62-30.
The strength of this team can be attributed to its many strong players. Corinne Howley is known for her three point shots. She averages 15 points a game and scored 28 points in the game against St. Peter’s (S.I.). Newcomers Marissa Maffei can be counted on for a strong defense and Megan Davidson is making a name for herself as a strong rebounder by averaging over 10 points a game. Lisa Abitante leads the team as a point guard. She is as much a threat offensively as she is defensively. She averages 10 points,, 10 assists and 10 rebounds a game.
Other members contributing to the success of this season are: sophomore Lisa Gericitano and freshman Kerry Gallagher, Kaitlyn Marshall, Kelly Marshall, Nicole Maresca and Alyson Tellone.
The JV finished their season with a record of 10 wins and 10 losses overall, and a league record of 5 wins and 5 losses. The Kearney Tigers are tied for third place going into the playoffs which started this month. Good luck and congratulations to all!!!
