Arson Specialist Nick Palumbo visited the Foren sic Science Department of M.S. 180 recently. He discussed how arson in vestigators establish various aspects of arson. Palumbo ex plain ed to the students what fire science is and the various behaviors of how fire reacts to combustible materials. Palumbo then show ed students a training video to give vis ual clues as to how fast a fire can move when there are incendiary devices or liquid accelerants involved.

Following the video students were given the opportunity to ask Palumbo questions about arson and the people who investigate it. Sixth-grader Rodney Green began the questions by asking, "How would the Fire Department proceed with an investigation and do they solve many of the arson crimes committed?" Palumbo assured our students that by using the various forensic techniques and tools available to investigators many of today’s cases are solved. Students then remarked how they were able to use tools and techniques similar to those mentioned and demonstrated in their classroom labs at M.S. 180.
