‘Changing Our Imperfect Self’

It is difficult to block out the world that exists around us.A0We hear news, speak to people at home and at work, and so many thoughts these days are based on fear.A0What will happen in the future?A0In almost every area of life, be it economics, health, politics, the outside world has enough to make us all worry.A0 So, how can we be happy without guarantees for the future?A0 How can we believe we can create our own happiness when who knows what can happen?

The most easily controlled people are ones that live in fear.A0 If I think I won’t be loved any more, I will have to have plastic surgery and keep changing my imperfect self.A0As I go through the natural aging process, I automatically become less valuable in our society.A0I don’t look good, my body will fail me, etc. are thoughts that can make me feel lousy.A0I live in self-doubt.A0 Instead I could be thinking of my wrinkles as badges of survival and experience, and saying, why did the medical profession change the obesity scale downward so we all think we are fatter than Amer icans used to be? People in other countries drink wine, eat cheese, have fun.A0 So many of us are too scared to have fun. We may believe that if we lead the disciplined, "correct" life, then nothing bad will happen to us.

From the spiritual perspective, life and death are not controlled by us.A0 We can do things to make our voyage more pleasant along the way or make the way terrible, but so much is accepted as being outside our own control.A0 Then how do I live thinking that life is not controlled by me or my actions?A0 There has to be a link to something out there that controls nature, like the waves or seasons, that also keeps me as part of the big picture of life.A0All of life is about change whether on this
Earth or somewhere else.A0If I trust my self and my belief in the big pic ture of God/Universe, I can live fearlessly in the present moment.A0

In personal relationships, I can be myself wherever I am.A0I can accept
that some people will like me and others won’t.A0I can accept that change out side may mean my work is affected, the life I once knew is gone, but we can try to control ourselves enough to trust in ourselves and the big picture to find the new way of living.A0We can bring in the pleasures and special moments by choice. In spite of it all, I can push
away my fears of the nonexistent future, and maintain myself in peace,
in the unknown, in the present, and make the most of it.A0Even choosing
fear when looking at the future does not give any control, it just means
I will allow another’s point of view to dominate over mine moreeasily.A0 It feels so good when I can choose peace because of a belief that the future will be revealed as it is lived and experienced.
