Rockaway Rugby Starts Season At Village Lions

Rockaway Rugby Starts Season At Village Lions

Rockaway Rugby will start their fall campaign this Saturday at Randalls Island, entering a side in the 1st annual Village Lions 4 leaf tournament. This will mark the beginning of the spring season for the Fisheads. The season will culminate on April 17th when they will travel to Newport Rhode Island for their first National playoff appearance in 10 years.

Practice has begun, but all new players are welcome to attend on Thursday nights at Ft. Tilden (7pm). After a strong showing before the Queens St. Patrick’s Day match, attendance tailed off this past week, due in part to the fact there was no game this past Saturday. The Fisheads look forward to full participation in the coming weeks, leading up to the playoffs.

Rockaway Rugby Spring Schedule 2004: March 20-Village Lions St. Pats Tournament 9 a.m., March 27–TBA, April 3-DanburyA0away,A0April 10–Man hattanA0home, April 17–playoffs!!!...Newport R.I, April 24–playoffs round 2 or Union N.J. home, May 1,A0TBA, May 8–Long Island tournament.

The Fisheads were saddened to hear of the retirement of FDNY/Brooklyn basketball icon John "Jumbo" Miller of Queens.A0Following a tremendous weight gain this past winter, Miller mercifully called it a career. After years of whining about not being selected for assorted Fire Dept. teams, Jumbo was finally able to achieve some success by assembling a collection of all-stars under the tutelage of Kevin Coursey. We wish only the best to our good friend Jumbo.

Get well soon to Fishead winger Pat "crazy legs" Benn who had an unfortunate mishap after playing in last weeks rugby match.

Has anyone seen Jim Mullen? The former captain of the Fisheads and youth rugby coordinator has not been to a game or event in years. Rumor has it, he does stop by the rugby club every once in a while, to drop off his garbage.

The following people have not been seen at practice yetA0this year... Duke Foti, Cliff Shevlin, Tom Briody, Jim ‘Kermit’ Egan, Barry Cowhead, Bren nan Savage, Pat Savage, Monica Savage, Len, Ken, Tim, and Tom Nichtern, Dave McGowen, Pete Mills, Andrew Marley, Rich McDonagh, Jim McCann, Gator, Tyronne Sperling, Wayne Fox, Sean Callahan, Sean O’rourke, Sean McDonnell, Sean Mcdermott, Kenny Collins, Kenny Flynn, Kenny Specht, Kenny Goode, Steve Goode, Steve Hartley, Kevin Wrafter, Kevin McEachern, Jimmy Mullen, Jimmy Coyne, Jimmy Chess, Jimmy McAleer, Ted McAleer, Jimmy Howard, Alicia Howard, Howard Guitman, Fred Cornish, and Danny Rutledge

Stay tuned for more rugby news, as the season is just around the corner.
