Beach Volleyball Prepares For Season
Preparations for the Summer 2004 Rockaway Beach Volleyball League are underway. Patty Moule will again lead her troops into battle and try to top last year’s very successful campaign. Each year the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not. Ad ditionally, this is the time for all new individuals and teams to sign up for the new season. As always, there will be several different divisions with varying levels of skill. Last year’s switch to four divisions was applauded by players and will be used again.
Returning teams should insure their place in the league by calling Patty Moule before 3/24 at 212-604-7087. This is her work number and a message can be left anytime, day or night. Captains should leave their name and their team name in their message.
The next critical item follows on Wednesday, 3/31. Team captains are required to attend our first meeting of the year at the Kerry Hills Pub on 115th St. at 8:00 PM. All players are welcome as well. Captains should bring a deposit of $50 per team to insure a spot in the league.
Prospective new referees are welcome to come by if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.
The general feedback on the 2003 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone’s input. Feel free to attend the first meeting and to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes.
We are always striving for improvement.
You can mark a few special dates on your calendars already. Wednesday, 5/26 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Wednesday, 6/2, will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/14. On Saturday, 8/14, the league championships will be played – keep your schedules clear.
It will only be a short few months before the soap opera known as the RBVL tries to answer the questions:
Will the Kerry Hills youth make waves in the top division this season?
Can Bugsy get his gang to bounce back for another title?
Can a U.S. postal worker lead his team to a championship and still deliver the mail on time?
Will Rocky retire the "reverse flipper" after 15 years?
Will the Fab Five descend on Rock away and work their makeover magic?
It may seem a little cold to be thinking about beach volleyball but opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand.
If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 212-604-7087. See you on 3/31.
(Don’t forget to call by 3/24!)
