On Monday, January 26, M.S. 53’s Attendance Improvement Dropout Pre vention (AIDP) facilitator Ken Yanek presented a Parenting Skills Workshop and Luncheon. The guest speaker was Mark Weintraub, the school’s social worker. Also present was Dr. Kathleen Cashin, Region 5 Superintendent.

Mr. Weintraub spoke to the parents about discipline and ways a parent can be effective at implementing it. He explain-ed how this gives structure and support to a child. Re ward systems were discussed and the difference be tween positive and negative attention.

Aspects of fam-
ily empowerment were highlighted. Parents also have to teach about re-
lationships, right from wrong, and re - sponsibility. It was explained how parenting is such a difficult job to succeed at, but a very re warding one.

Principal Ken Graham spoke to parents thanking them for attending the Parenting Skills Workshop, ex plaining that the more we know about how to deal with children the better they will pro g-
ress into adult hood. He also mentioned to parents that there has been im provement of the school’s at tendance to more than 90 percent.
