Last Friday night, the crowd at St. Francis de Sales saw an excellent set of basketball games between South Windsor, Connecticut and St. Francis de Sales. It was a competitive battle between the 6th, 7th and 8th grade CYO teams from these schools.

The two schools have played a series of home and home games for 16 years. The tradition started when a former Rockaway resident with ties to the St. Francis De Sales CYO basketball program moved to South Windsor. The resident formed a relationship with the South Windsor basketball committee and introduced the idea of both teams facing each other in an annual home and home series of games.

The St. Francis 6th grade team won 42-30 to split the season series. "We were pressing a little more and we did a full court press at the end to win", said head coach Marty Andresen, who is also the president of the Rockaway Little League program.

The 7th grade squads faced off in the most competitive game of the night. It wasn’t until South Windsor hit four free throws with 30 seconds left to seal a 57-54 win. Matthew Knott led St. Francis with 13 points as the team played a spirited game.

The St. Francis 8th grade team got into foul trouble as two of their best players fouled out in the fourth quarter. South Windsor then pulled away for a 59-48 win. Next year, the fans can look forward to another set of competitive games between these two teams.
