Hazmat Incident Hits Bayswater LIPA Plant
Leaking oil striking a hot pipe caused an all-out response by police and firefighters on Tuesday to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) generating plant in Bayswater.
"The pipe began to smolder and it was encased in asbestos," a spokesperson for the New York City Fire Department told The Wave. "That triggered a response by our hazardous material (Hazmat) units."
The fire was quickly extinguished and it was quickly found that no hazardous material had escaped into the air and that the surrounding homes were in no danger, according to the spokesperson.
The LIPA plant is located at 1425 Bay 24 Street in Bayswater.
