Meeks Urges U.S. Intervention In Haiti

Congressman Gregory Meeks recently met with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and U.S. Envoy to the United Nations, John D. Negroponte, to urge continued U.S. support for U.N. activities in Haiti.A0 In an emergency meeting Sunday, the United Nations Se curity Council authorized the im mediate dispatch of a multinational force to Haiti and the creation of a U.N. peacekeeping force to replace it in the spring.A0

"I am pleased that the Haitian peoples' cries for restoration of order are finally being heard by the international community.A0 The U.N. has a strong history of peacekeeping and nation building that is needed if democracy is to be restored in Haiti.A0In addition to a security force, I also urged that the U.N. assist in disarming Haitian civilians and in helping Haitians hold elections.A0

My message to Negroponte was that the U.S. support these measures to the fullest, as we have not always had the friendliest relationship with the U.N."
