Stella Maris Flippers Enter Playoffs On A Roll

Stella Maris Flippers Enter Playoffs On A Roll

Stella Maris’ Varsity and Junior Varsity teams completed their regular season schedule with away (2/14) and then home (2/24) victories over Font Bonne. The wins place the senior squad in first with a 14-0 league record and the J.V. in second place with a 12-2 record.

The Feb. 10th game was the first meeting, since last March’s Cham pionship game, between the two teams. SM won that nail biter 64-60 as both teams put on quite a show. This game featured much of the same type of see saw battle. SM won 62-53. Jen Anglero (15), Natalie DeSanctis (13) and Mary Beth Raphael (10) paced the Blue and Gold. Natalia Alexander scored 12 in the game but was lost early in the third quarter (ACL injury). Stella’s JV also won that day, 63-21. Tara Gleason (13), Michelle Raaf (12), Alexa Rosella (12) and Maureen Carey (6) led the way for SM. In the JV rematch, on 2/24, the Lady Flippers were again victorious, 54-29. Nine SM players scored as Elizabeth Murray, Caroline Weeks and Kara Bobby worked hard at both ends of the court.

Which saves the best for last: the Varsity rematch earlier that day. The teams, once again, entertained the crowd. The Home White pulled out the 49-39 victory by outscoring the Bon nies 39-24 in the second half. Yes, the score was 15-10 at half time: but not for lack of effort.

It appeared that both teams were feeding off the high level of intensity in the gym. Prior to the game SM held their Senior Ceremony marking the seniors’ final home court appearance. The deep, emotional ceremony carried over in to the game. Players from both teams hustled, dove for every lose ball and contested each shot. But the baskets were few and far between. Half time seemed to calm things down and both teams developed a better offensive flow.

SM’s Jen Anglero scored the quarter’s first 2 baskets. But FHA an swered to stay ahead by 3. Then with the score 20-19, SM’s fist big basket came.

Senior Liz Jablonski drilled a trey from the right side and Stella took the lead for the first time 22-20. FH tied it again and then Mary Grace Brady hit another trey for SM. The third ended with SM up 27-24.

In the fourth, the Lady Flippers would get some breathing room and then the Bonnies would come charging back. An 11-6 spurt put SM up 38-30 with under 3 minutes to go.

With Seniors Liz Jablonski, Nicole Santoro and Juanita Whyms (7-quarter pts.) leading the rebounding efforts Stella appeared to have control of the game.

Key steals by Senior backcourt mates MaryBeth Raphael (2/4 from line) and Natalie DeSanctis (steal and conversion) sealed the game. SM was led by Juanita Whyms (15) and Jen Anglero (14).

The JV team will play their quarterfinal playoff game on Tuesday March 2nd at St. John’s Prep. A win places them in the Semis on Thursday @ St. Edmund’s.

The Varsity has a first round bye and moves into the Semis on Thursday March 4th also being held at St. John’s Prep. Championship games are set for March 7th at St. Francis College.
