Up 14-9 in the second quarter against #6 ranked Boys and Girls, the Beach Channel Men’s Dolphins looked as if they could make it a competitive game. But the bottom fell out in the second for the Dolphins and the Boys and Girls Kangaroos advanced to the Sweet 16 of the PSAL ‘A" playoffs with a 54-35 win.

Up against a more a physical team in Boys and Girls, the Dolphins could not stop the guard play of James Gilmore and Tyrell Cruz. On the offensive end, Gilmore knocked down five 3-pointers to score 22 points for the game. On the defensive end, Cruz put a damper on Dolphins’ leading scorer Arthur Robertson. After averaging 25 points a game this season, Robertson only scored 18 points.

"They were bigger, stronger, tougher and it came down to guard play", said Dolphins head coach Jim Malone. "Their guards were solid, played good defense and the other kids helped".

The Dolphins started out strong with a 12-7 lead after the first quarter. But they fell apart in a second quarter where the Boys and Girls Kangaroos went on a 24-4 run in the second quarter to go up 31-16.

The Dolphins finished 10-11 overall and 8-6 in PSAL Queens. Though eliminated for the third consecutive year in the second round, this group made great strides at the end of the season to make the playoffs.

The team lost four starters. Arthur Robertson and Michael Pledger had to take up more of the offensive load and the team integrated many young players into the regular lineup.

Upsetting a bigger team in Erasmus, 51-48, in the first round, Coach Malone was pleased with his how his Dol phins fought this season.

"We tried to maximize what we had. The thought of being here in the beginning of the season would have never crossed my mind with this group. There was nobody but Arthur and Mike Pledger coming back. It wasn’t a bad run".
