Beach Channel DolphinsWin In PSAL First Round
On Friday, February 13 the Beach Channel High School girls basketball team took on the Richard R. Green High School of Teaching in the windowless pit that is the Beach Channel High School gym and won by a whopping score of 61-19.
In their first playoff game of the year the Lady Dolphins jumped out to an early lead. Donning their home blue and white uniforms the Beach Chan nel girls jumped out to a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, despite the absence of their star point guard Chaquit Ivory. Jodi Vitale started in place of the missing Ivory, but was soon replaced by Leona Laibhen after being called for two quick fouls. Ola Soetan rounded out the back-court for the Lady Dolphins and made several key defensive plays throughout the first quarter to help calm down a Beach Channel team that seemed extremely excited to be back in the playoffs. The offense failed to convert its first two times down the court and turnovers allowed Richard R. Green to look competitive in the first quarter.
The Lady Dolphins corrected their early mistakes in the second quarter and had the game all wrapped up by the start of the second half. Katreem Palmer, who has been Beach Chan nel’s leader on the court all year led the team with 13 first half points, catapulting then Lady Dolphins to a 31-11 lead by the end of the second quarter.
The Lady Dolphins came out firing in the second half and never looked back. Forward Gina Giles who had been quiet in the first half sunk into her groove in the third quarter sinking two three-pointers to launch the Lady Dolphins further ahead. Katreem Pal mer continued to dominate on both ends of the court and proved why she is so valuable to this team. She grab bed nearly every rebound, both offensive and defensive, and sank several mid-range jumpers to compliment her powerful inside game. She even handled the ball on several fast breaks and looked unstoppable driving down the lane.
Charlene Green sank a three pointer late in the game to cap off the scoring at 61-19. Katreem Palmer led all scorers with 23 points, while Gina Giles and Ola Soetan each contributed fourteen of their own. The Lady Dolphins proved why they are the team to beat in the B-Division this year. After finishing the regular season 16-0 some doubters claimed that Beach Channel played in a weak division and would not match up well against teams from other divisions. However, Richard R. Green who posted a modest 9-8 record this year, looked pathetic against the Lady Dolphins, who were playing without one of their best starters. With a full roster, Beach Channel will undoubtedly be tough to beat. Renaissance High School from Queens will try however, when they visit the imposing Beach Channel gym on February 24.
