Gertrude Golden Aybar
Music Director/ Teacher

Gertrude Golden Aybar a 23-year resident of the Rockaways passed away on December 12. She was 71.

Aybar, originally from Savannah, Georgia, worked as a music director and a teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents Willie and Grace Jones Golden; and her brother Carl Golden.

She is survived by her brother, Jim Golden of Savannah, Ga.; her sisters, Ruth Frye of Savannah, Ga., and Ver nell Holly of Indianapolis, Indiana; her goddaughter, Sister Capt. Karrie mah; her nieces, Veronica, Theresa Bryant of Savannah, Ga.; and a number of ex tended family members, The Honor able Minister Farrakhan and family, Abdullah Muhammad, Secre tary James Muhammad, Truhedah Amon-Ra, Tynetta Megginson and others, the Rev. Al and Kathy Sharpton and a host of other friends.

Funeral Arrangements were en trusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home with a service at John Joyce Funeral Home Chapel in the Bronx. Disposition took place at Forest Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.

Nora H. Backhouse
N.Y Telephone Co. Manager

Nora H. Backhouse, a longtime resident of Rockaway Point, passed away on February 2.

Backhouse, originally from Brook lyn, lived in Rockaway Point for several years and was retired from her job as a manager for the New York Tele phone Company. She had served as a sacristan at St. Thomas More Church for a long time.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Annabelle Blackhouse.

She is survived by her cousin, Catherine Tait.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Interment took place at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Deloris Williams Greene
Far Rockaway Resident

Deloris Williams Greene, a lifelong resident of Far Rockaway passed away on December 25. She was 74.

Greene worked in Children's Ser vices and was a member of St. Steph ens Episcopal Church in Jamaica.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Megget and Oscar Williams.

She is survived by her sons, Mat thew, Wayne, and Michael Gadsby; her grandchildren, Matthew II and Alex ander; her daughters-in-law, Arlene and Jacqueline; her goddaughter, Brenda; as well as sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews, and cherished friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home with a service at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Jamaica. Dis position took place at Greenfield Cemetery in Hempstead, NY.

William F. Hughes
Construction Liaison

William F. Hughes a lifelong resident of Breezy Point passed away on February 1.

Hughes spent his lifetime in Breezy Point and was a devoted member of the community. He had served as a chairman of the Breezy Point Catholic Club Mardi Gras Committee as well as the manager of the undefeated Huggie Bear Softball Team. He was currently a member of the Rockaway Point Association Board of Directors.

Hughes served in the Army during the Korean War and was retired from his job as a construction liaison for Con Edison.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen; his sister Anne Hughes; and his brother, Frank Hughes.

He is survived by his daughters, Dixie Grimaldi, Cindy Amodeo, Laura lee Maloney and Jessica Brazier; his son William (Casey) Hughes; his sister, Phyllis Sneddon; his brothers, Bobby and John Hughes as well as nine grandchildren and a host of other friends and relatives.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home with a funeral mass scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6 at St. Thomas More Church. Interment is at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Mother Theresa A. Jackson
Caregiver

Mother Theresa A. Jackson a longtime resident of Rockaway Beach passed away on January 27. She was 72.

Jackson was born in Philadelphia but moved to Rockaway Beach 35 years ago. She gave her service as a caregiver to St. John the Baptist Church 35 years ago.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Ella Morris; her husband, Arthur; her son, Gordon; her sister, Priscilla; and her brother, Raymond.

She is survived by her children, Arthur Jr. and Alan; her brother, Charles Morris; her sister, Helen; her grandchildren, Guy, Moses and Sasha; her Goddaughters, Joyce Scott, Tracy Thomas, Shanita Kates and Jessica Kates; her daughters-in-law, Sandra and Helen Jackson; her sisters-in-law, Doris and Carole Morris; a very special friend, Bernadine Williams; friends, Marine Myers, Louiza Pettway and a host of many other friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home with a service at St. John the Baptist Church in Rockaway Beach. Disposition was held at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington, New York.

James F. Johnson
Broad Channel Resident

James F. Johnson, a former resident of Broad Channel passed away on January 30. He was 61.

Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Margaret Johnson, both lifelong residents of Broad Channel.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his children, Jay and Julia; and his brothers, Henry Jr. of Merrick, Robert of Holly Hill, Florida and John, of Broad Channel.

Cremation was private.

Maria Pia Monti
Post Office Employee

Maria Pia Monti, a Far Rockaway resident for 15 years died on January 24. She was 45.

Monti, who was born in Trenton New Jersey, was an employee of the U.S. Post Office.

She was predeceased by her father Pietro Monti.

She is survived by her children, Manuel, Marci, Danielle, David, Devon and Janeen; her grandchildren, Malina and Anessa; her mother, Letizia Vaccarello; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at the First Church of God in Far Rockaway. Disposition took place at Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, New Jersey.

Rita F. O'Rorke
Homemaker

Rita F. O'Rorke, a longtime resident of Breezy Point passed away on Feb ruary 2.

O'Rorke lived in Breezy Point and was a dedicated member of the Altar Rosary and Golden Age Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph O'Rorke.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia McCann; her son, Richard O'Rorke; her sister, Dorothy Griffin; her grand-daughters, Beth McCann, Trisha McCann, and Laura O'Rorke; her grandsons, Kevin McCann, Brian O'Rorke and Timothy O'Rorke; and her great-grandson Kevin Patrick.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home with a mass at St. Thomas More in Breezy Point. Interment took place at the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Frizel Quarles
Homemaker

Frizel Quarles, a longtime resident of the Rockaways, passed away on Jan uary 23. She was 77.

Quarles was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina and has been living in the Rockaways for over sixty years. She was a devoted member of the Refuge Temple.

Quarles was preceded in death by her parents, George Buskey Sr. and Emmaline Buskey; her husband, James Quarles; her son, Richard Quarles and her brother, Stanley Buskey.

She is survived by her sons, Jerry, Benny, John and Oscar Quarles; her daughters, Far Rockaway residents Shirley, Carol, and Emmaline Quarles; her brother, George Buskey; her sisters-in-law, Lucille Buskey and Kathy Walker; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; her nephews, Dwight and George Buskey; her nieces, Deborah and Marion Buskey; her son-in-law, James Mills, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Disposition took place at Plainlawn Cemetery in Hicks ville, New York.

Janet Alice Reeves

Janet Alice Reeves, a longtime resident of the Rockaways, passed away on January 23. She was 78.

Reeves was born in Richmond, Virginia, and has been living in the Rockaways for 27 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Reeves; her son, Ronald; and her daughter, Sandra.

She is survived by her children, Charles Jr. and Michelle; her grandchildren, Sandra Currie, Kayla Currie, and Charles Reeves; her sisters, Lucille Barley and Edith McKnight; her brothers, Raymond Archer and Aurelios Archer; her great-aunts, Mar garet Johnson and Beatrice Austin; her daughter-in-law, Sybil Nurse-Reeves; her son-in-law, Darrell Currie and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements were en trust ed with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home with a service at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rosedale. Disposition took place at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.

Desri Merline Claudia Sancho-Alder
Nurse

Desri Merline Claudia Sancho-Alder, a longtime resident of the Rock aways passed away on January 19.

Sancho-Alder, who was born in Guyana, had been living in the Rock aways and working as a nurse for over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Alonzo, Gustavus, RoseAnn and Buddy Sancho.

She is survived by her children, Jacent, VereAnn, Davese, Leah and Vasco; her grandchildren, Nickecia, Shomari, Errica, Chennel, Dameo, Devante, Brianne, Justin, Bobby, Tyra, Jasmine, Shanniece, Dante and Vakel; her aunt Stella Dover; her nieces and nephews, Olive, Shelon, Monte, Alphin, Teresa, Steven, Michael Sancho Jr., Michael, Ronald and Stephan; her siblings, Ruby, Olive, Eula, Barbara, Dora, Phyllis, Alwyn, Cecil and many other relatives and friends.
