Sanders: LIRR Discounts Rockaway

Councilman James Sanders is furious. He is outraged at the latest actions taken by the MTA LIRR. The pilot program CityTicket will reduce fares for all NYC travelers except those commuting to and from the Far Rockaway station.

"Are we not part of NYC? Don’t our tax dollars count?" says Councilman Sanders. "The people of the Rock away’s deserve the same treatment as the rest of the City. It seems that it is always the people who need the most help, have the hardest time getting it."

The MTA claims that due to the fact that the trains traveling to and from the Far Rockaway station runs through Nassau County, the residents of Far Rockaway are ineligible for the new rates.

Sanders is calling for an immediate meeting with the head of the LIRR to resolve this matter.

The MTA in its latest campaign to attracts the public to the LIRR, has implemented a special new weekend rate for most of New York City travelers. The program called CityTicket began on January 10 and will continue until its initial evaluation in six months time.

According to the MTA’s website the CityTicket program will provide weekend commuters a one way travel ticket beginning and ending in NYC at a reduced rate of $2.50.

However, the website goes on to state that the "LIRR CityTicket is not valid for travel to or from85the Far Rock away Station." Also affected by this blatant exclusion are the Shea Stadium and Belmont Park stations which consequently are only open during special events. The Far Rockaway station is the only year round MTA LIRR station that is being left out in the cold.

"The people of the Rockaway’s as well as the rest of my district de serve the same opportunities provided to the rest of this city and the exclusion of any community from a city-wide program is unacceptable," says Coun cil man Sanders.
