Friends For Stranded Motorists

State Senator Malcolm Smith has announced that motorists in the Rockaways who are experiencing car trouble may turn to a volunteer organization called "Chaverim of the Five Towns and Rockaways, Inc." for assistance.

"Chaverim can help people whose car locks are frozen, whose car is stuck in the snow, who have a flat tire, a dead battery or an empty gas tank. The group can also help those who are locked out of their cars or homes," Smith said.

The Chaverim phone line at 718.337.1800 is staffed 24 hours a day by trained professionals, ac cording to Smith.

An operator will ask for the driver’s address or location, the year, make and color of the car, the license plate number and the problem that the motorist is experiencing. The operator will then transmit the call to all Chaverim volunteers.

After signing a waiver authorizing work on the car, the volunteer will begin the necessary repairs to ensure the car can get to a mechanic or repair shop.

Chaverim’s service area includes Far Rockaway, Belle Harbor, JFK Airport and the Five Towns.

"With numerous volunteers through out the area, Chaverim provices the assurance of a quick response to car or home trouble." Smith said. "After repairs are made, individuals are handed an envelope in which they may send a contribution.

Given the value and quality of this service, I’m sure everyone who has received assistance from Chaverim will want to support the organization’s continued efforts," said Smith.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should contact the organization.
