M.S. 53 Celebrates Winter Festival
On Wednesday, December 17, M.S. 53 presented its "Winter Showcase Spectacular." Ms. A. Majied and Mr. Nel son of the Music Department, Ms. Thornton of the Dance Department, and the M.S. 53 staff produced a wonderful seasonal show full of music, dance, singing and colorful costumes. The newly formed band under Ms. Majied’s supervision was spectacular, playing both classics and modern holiday tunes.
Mr. Nelson, veteran music teacher, conducted the Brian Piccolo Chorus through many wonderful holiday songs. Ms. Jackson had the children perform the newly choreographed "Hosanna Praise" dance. Also, Ms. Thorn ton’s dancers gave a great version of the nutcracker. An inspiring tribute to Celia Cruz was performed by the dance troupe. The students had been rehearsing for this annual winter festival for over a month. Many parents and staff volunteered their time and expertise to help the children put this production together.
Among the staff who helped were: Assistant Principal Greenberg (sound); Ms. Duzant (commentator); Ms. Rain es, Ms. Lawrence, Ms. Allende and Ms. Ackerman (artwork and designs); and Ms. Acosta (dance). A performance of "Silent Night" was also delivered in sign language for the hearing im pair ed. Principal Kenneth Graham was most pleased with his school’s productions and noted that "M.S. 53 is not just interested in the academics, but also in the many facets of education that will make our students well-rounded." Mr. Graham has helped guide many students at M.S. 53 since the early 1970’s when he was a math teacher.
