Coyote Leaves Cops Out In The Cold At Breezy Point
A wild Coyote led police from the 100 Precinct in Rockaway Park and U.S. Park Police a merry chase ac ross the ice on Jamaica Bay on Mon day before it swam back to land and disappeared into the wildlife refuge.
The wild-coyote chase started at about 4:30 p.m., when a call over the 911 system said that there was a "dog out on the floating ice off Breezy Point," at the extreme western end of the Rockaway peninsula.
Units from the NYPD and the Federal Park Police responded, along with a U.S. Coast Guard boat that was in the area.
They were soon joined by at least two network television helicopters that arrived to record the scene.
The coyote, however, tried hard to keep away from its rescuers, jumping from ice floe to ice floe until it got to within 100 yards of the shore.
As television camera rolled, the wet and cold animal then jumped into the icy waters of the bay, swam to shore and disappeared.
