SFDS Students Visit Minnesota

Two sixth grade students, their parents and a teacher from St. Francis de Sales recently made a trip to Minnea polis to meet and thank residents of the First Christian Residence Nursing Home who reached out to children of the school after the tragic events of September and November 2001. The residents of the nursing home sent 35 handmade dolls to the school in Dec ember of 2001. The students sent thank you notes and pictures. A friendship then developed between the two groups.

Last year, the residents sent 90 dolls to the fifth grade and the students used their own materials to dress up the dolls as a person from history or literature. The fifth graders also had a bake sale to raise money for the supplies needed by the nursing home to continue their "button baby" project. The students, now in the sixth grade, wrote essays about making a difference in other people’s lives. Two SFDS students were chosen to fly to Minnea polis to meet and thank the makers of the dolls and pick up the new dolls for this year’s fifth grade.

The two students, Rachel Rodriguez and Elizabeth Woods, read their essays at a "Make a Difference Day" cele bration at the nursing home on October 25. The entire group was also treated to a trip to the Mall of America and given a tote bag of mementos from the trip.
