Charity Game Highlights Tutorial Program
M.S. 198 will be host to the charity basketball featuring the St. John Baptist Church Crusaders vs. The WWRL Radio 1600 "Magic" Basketball Team. The proceeds will benefit the Josephine Johnson Reading/Math Tutorial Program. The event will be held tonight, January 16th starting at 7 p.m. at M.S. 198 at 365 Beach 56 St reet.
Josephine Johnson was a devoted and tireless fighter of many causes who passed away on July 4, 2002 after succumbing to colon cancer. She was involved in many activities and programs in the Rockaway. Before passing away, Johnson served as Congressman Gregory W. Meeks’ chief of staff and was a devoted member of St. John Baptist Church.
The program helps the youth improve their reading, writing and mathematics sills, as well as SAT/Regents exam preparation. It also seeks to motivate children towards self-development and self-improvement. The program is free and meets every second and fourth Saturday of each month through May from 12 noon-3 p.m. Classes will be held at St. John Baptist Church located at 74-05 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
The basketball game will feature children, teens and young adults on the St. John Crusaders team. Tickets can be purchased at the front door of M.S. 198. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 children. WBLS will be giving away prizes during the game.
