Lifeguard Applications for Gateway
Both males and females who are strong swimmers are encouraged to take the pre-employment performance test to qualify as lifeguards at the Gateway National Recreation Area.
The pre-employment test will be given at Fordham University on January 31, February 28, March 13 and April 3 as well as Stony Brook University on March 27.
To pre-register for the test, applicants should call 1-800-678-7946. Lifeguards work five, eight-hour days each week. These jobs pay between $11 and $18 per hour in the New York area.
Applicants must be able to pass the "rigorous" performance test that includes swimming 600 yards in less than 10 minutes and perform a simulated rescue in less than four minutes. That rescue test includes swimming 50 yards to retrieve a dummy, towing the dummy for 50 yards, getting out of the water and carrying a 150-pound person for 50 yards and then performing rescue breathing on a CPR dummy for one minute.
They must then swim under water for 125 feet, surfacing exactly four times, break free from the grip of another person while under water and run 1 and one-half miles in less than 12 minutes.
Lifeguard candidates must be U.S. citizens and more than 18 years of age, except at Gateway and Fire Island, where candidates must be more than 16 years of age. Preference in employment will be given to qualified military veterans.
