Rockaway Sports Association’s Sanz Reaches Goals By Greg Carter

To bring in the New Year of 2004, I’d like to introduce to the Rockaway Community one of its brightest future student-athletes, Maria E. Sanz.

Instilled from her parents Ricardo and Bertha Sanz, Maria has shown a true sense of dedication, sportsmanship and drive that most young athletes do not possess.

Let me give you the readers a delightful description of young Ms. Sanz. 2004 will be Maria’s sixth year as a member of the Rockaway Sports Association’s multitude of programs. She is a true triple threat in every sense of the word. Maria is an outstanding student athlete from St. Rose of Lima and a member of the Golden Girls personally sponsored by Susan Locke of The Wave.

Maria excels at tennis, softball, lacrosse and bowling. Family dedication and a unique competitiveness brings out the best in Maria. She reminds me of Muhammed Ali, Joe Montana and Nancy Lieberman all rolled into one. Maria is always present, always one of the first to arrive and the most focused.

One of the ways that demonstrates what a tremendous athlete and team player Maria Sanz is, every coach that Maria plays or always communicates the great traits and qualities of and about Maria.

Maria recently won the 2003 Rock Tennis Tournament, Maria finished third in the New York Junior Tennis League X-Mas Tournament held at the National Tennis Center. Maria made the 2002-03 New York City PAL All-Star team that won the championship at Shea Stadium. Maria has won several academic honors at St. Rose, not to mention that Maria’s GPA is an outstanding 93.2. Several high schools have and are showing strong interest in young Ms. Sanz.

Unfortunately, especially for our two local high schools, Maria will leave the Rockaways for a top-notch Catholic School on the mainland. So, hats off to another one of Rockaway’s rising student athletes: Maria Sanz.
