High School Sports Update Features All Stars By Elio Velez

The New York Newsday and Daily News recently announced their high school football all-stars and some players from the Rockaways were named.

New York Newsday named Far Rockaway QB Chris Howard, WR Leon Grant and Beach Channel QB/ DB Kamel Cosgrove were named to the All-Queens first team. Beach Channel’s DE/TE Alan Trujillo and Far Rockaway RB Lawrence Whitehead and DT Ricardo Remy were named to the honorable mention team.

The Daily News selected Ricardo Remy to the All-Queens first team. RB Michael Toney and WR/KR James Romain from Far Rockaway were named to the All-Queens second team.

The Daily News announced Belle Harbor native John Corning from Xaverian High School to the All-Brooklyn second team. Playing WR for Xaverian as a junior, Corning was second in the yardage in the Catholic High School League. Corning converted to WR in his first varsity season after leading the Xaverian freshman and junior varsity squads to a 18-1 record as a quarterback in his first two seasons.

These are the results of high school games as of Wednesday, January 7.

Beach Channel 70

Springfield Gardens 60

The Beach Channel Dolphins led 32-21 at halftime and saw that lead fritted away to a 41-41 tie at the end of the third quarter. But it was the play of seniors Arthur Robertson and Michael Pledger that got the Dolphins a win in PSAL Queens 1-B league play. Micheal Pledger scored a team high 20 points and Arthur Robertson added 20 points and 11 rebounds as The Dolphins pulled away in the fourth. Beach Channel improved to 7-0 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

Campus Magnet 67

Far Rockaway 65

Far Rockaway’s Derrick Gabriel missed a last second three pointer in the fourth quarter to give Campus Magnet their second win over the Seahorses this season. Campus Magnet improves to 8-0 and in first place in the Queens 1-B division. Far Rockaway falls to 7-2 and is in second place.

Beach Channel 51

Beach Channel improved to 11-1 overall and 10-0 within the PSAL Queens 1-B division with an easy win at home. Katreem Palmer led with 12 points and Gina Giles and Olabusa Soetan

Far Rockaway 56

Franklin K. Lane 18

Far Rockaway coasted at home to an easy divisional win over Lane. Savona McGhie scored 21 points and Shamar Stewartson added 18 points. Naiyma Reid scored 6 points in her return from a separated shoulder suffered against Beach Channel on December 22.


With key people returning from last season’s club and some new additions, the Beach Channel swimming team is off to a competitive 3-1 start in the PSAL Queens Division.
