The Hotel was one of the largest in Rockaway and built at the turn of last century. Unfortunately, it was completely destroyed by a fire after it opened.

In the 1940's, when he was still in high school, Walter Blum started donating blood and continued through his lifetime. In the late 1960's, the son of Bobby Bornstein, a longtime family friend, was diagnosed with leukemia. Walter, Dean Georges, Bill Blum Sr., Msgr. John Brakcen, Chester Maskin and other family and friends went every Tuesday and donated platelets at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Unfortunately, young Joey Bornstein lost his life to cancer but he gave Walter and so many others the encouragement and commitment to continue to donate blood and platelets. For many years, Walter and the group would load up the station wagon and head to NYC every Tuesday and also early on Thanksgiving mornings and on Christmas Eves to give their pints. Some of Walter's friends still carry on this wonderful tradition. One of the greatest pleasures he had in his life was knowing that he was able to keep a child alive for another Christmas. That is one of the reasons we choose this time of year to organize a blood drive. The entire Blum Family looks forward to seeing you at St. Francis de Sales School Auditorium on January 11.
