Knights Of Columbus Celebrate Holiday Season
Rockaway Council #2672, Knights of Columbus spent a busy month preparing for and celebrating Christmas, emphasizing joy, caring, community, fraternalism, family and children.
The preparations commenced on November 26 with Grand Knight Larry Kelly and Deputy Grand Knight Jim Hurley constructing, staining and waterproofing a manger to replace the aging structure of the old one. Three days later, members met to complete the set-up of lights and figurines, and changed the billboards to read, "Keep Christ in Christmas."
All of these preparations were made for the December 2 worldwide K of C "Light Up For Christ" program, directed out of the K of C headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut. Reverend James Devine met with council members and friends, and led them in prayer and song as he blessed the crèche and everyone who was present.
The council member’s party was held on December 19. Gifts were donated to children in the pediatric units of Peninsula General and St. John’s Episcopal South Shore Hospitals. Santa Claus and his helpers delivered the gifts just before Christmas.
The council held its Children’s Christmas Party on December 21. More than 100 children and grandchildren of members enjoyed sweets, a magic show and treats from Santa. Council members, their spouses and adult "kids" helped put the party together, and helped Santa distribute gifts.
