BCHS Band Fundraiser Set For January 10
The Beach Channel High School Marching Band is hoping that ticket sales for their January concert will raise the rest of the money they need to perform in a Disney World parade during President’s Week.
The band is all set to march in the "Share a Dream Come True Parade," scheduled for Feb. 17. They passed a stringent videotape audition, and plan to travel by coach bus to save money, but fear their plans could be stalled.
"The kids have been going crazy fundraising," said BCHS Music Dir ector Barry Domfort. "They have even gone out in snowstorms."
By selling bagels every morning, hold ing regular bake sales and asking for donations, they have raised an impressive $16,000 – but that’s only about half of what they need to make it to the Sunshine State.
"We need everybody to come to the concert and bring their friends," Dom fort said, adding that the auditorium’s acoustics will make for great show. "It’s different from seeing them on the street," he said.
The concert will also feature the school’s chorus, concert band and jazz band, which are pitching in to help their fellow musicians. There will also be special performances and solos.
The marching band, meanwhile, has managed to forge a great reputation in recent years. Besides playing at nursing homes and in local parades (rain or shine), they have marched for former President Bill Clinton – who they have appealed to for help.
"Any time anyone needs a band our band is there," Domfort said. State Assemblywoman Audrey Pheff er is even looking to get them a good spot in Manhattan’s St. Pat rick’s Day Parade.
Direct donations will be graciously accepted as well. "If any of the local banks, civic associations or anyone else could help out, that would be fantastic," said Domfort.
About 40 students, five parent chaperones hope to make the trip.
Tickets for the January 10 concert at the high school are $12. They are avail able at the office of Assembly woman Audrey Pheffer, 90-16 Rock away Beach Boulevard; City Council man Joe Addabbo Jr.’s office, 92-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard; and The Wave office, 88-08 Rock away Beach Boulevard.
