Woman Welted By Mystery Hospital Shot
A Far Rockaway woman got an unexpected shot at the clinic this week when a bullet came through the window of the exam room she was in, leaving her bruised, police said.
The 37-year-old woman, who police did not identify, was accompanying her elderly mother, a patient at the St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Clinic, in Far Rockaway. She was standing in front of the examination table, where her mother was seated, when the bullet struck her.
The incident sparked some confusion at the hospital – the woman thought she was hit by debris, but a doctor examined her and determined that she had been hit by the .22 caliber round, which was recovered from the scene.
Police, who used a trajectory pinpointing device, said they think the shot came from an apartment building across the street, at 407 Beach 20 Street. They canvassed the street and apartments making two unrelated arrests, but didn’t find any other evidence related to the shooting, police said.
Other reports on the incident incorrectly stated that the woman was at home when the shooting occurred.
Detectives from the 101 Precinct are continuing to investigate.
