The Friends of Rockaway (FOR), a local environmental group, has complained to Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe that a former parking lot between Beach 67 Street and Beach 68 Street along the boardwalk has become a Parks Department beach waste transfer station.

"It’s really become visually unappealing," says Bernard Blum, the president of the FOR. "The site has been attracting dumpers including construction and demolition debris."

Blum says that the lot should be cleaned up and fenced-in because it is now a safety hazard for the neighborhood.

"A fire at the site would not only ruin the boardwalk and the habitat around the area, it would threaten the neighbors as well."
