Mommy And Me Celebrates 10th Anniversary
By Stan Brown

The Mommy and Me Tournament featured the mother-daughters team of Talia Willaims, Shalia Williams and Mrs. Williams.

The Sorrentino Recreation Center once again held the 10th Annual Mommy & Me Double-Dutch Tournament on Saturday, November 22. What’s importance about this tournament is that it is recognition of the importance of family formal training in Double Dutch. As in any other sport, Double Dutch is to training one’s body as it is to training one’s mind. What the staff of the Sorrentino Center is hoping to create here are not necessarily more world champions, but to teach our youth and individuals that dedication and hard work are our greatest attributes.

The Mommy and Me have many levels and goals. It’s an opportunity for mothers and children to share quality time together and to enjoy playing a sport together. It’s also to share responsibility of turning and jumping and learning what teamwork means.

All in attendace enjoyed the tournament. 28 youth jumpers, 14 parent jumpers, a grandmother, a great grandmother and the fathers were also there in support. The four divisions the jumpers competed was: 6-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15 and under. All participants won awards upon completion of the tournament rounds. There are two 30-second rounds and one two-minute round. The total score combines each time the left foot hits the floor. The top honors went to Monet Davis, Monique Seow and Muniyra Moore.

Special thanks goes to Mr. Bernard Robinson, center manager for judging the contest and also Robert Lindo for scorekeeping. The Sorrentino staff deserves special thanks as well. We would like to congratulate all of the mothers that participated in this all so important event. Family participation is a priority on the list at Sorrentino Recreation Center. We had staffmothers turning and jumping uch as Denise Hawkins, Chaleene Nash and Latoya Robinson, along with help from Danielle Goldfarb (our photographer)
