St. Francis – Fourth Grade CYO Champs
On November 16, the St. Francis CYO Fourth grade girl’s team won their third consecutive Queens championship. The team played three tough playoff games and showed great tenacity throughout the season.
The first playoff game, against Our Lady of Hope from Middle Village, started with strong offense from St. Francis. The midfield team of Jacqueline Gillen, Kayla LaCognata, Summer Trusttum and Bridget Klein was outstanding and provided a lot of outlets to support the forwards. The defense of Marlene Macron, Kathleen Jedruszcruk and Marta Tomaszewski made sure that the Hope didn’t score. St. Francis won the away game 5-0.
St. Francis then encountered tough competition from St. Thomas More in Breezy Point. Deirdre Ray stole two goalie kicks to bring St. Francis to an early 2-0 lead. Deirdre Munday showed outstanding hustle and was a team leader throughout the game. Goalie Catherine Brown and defenders Shannon Dinerman, Catherine Kelly, Lauren Tower and Annie White gave St. Francis the edge to hold on to the win, beating St. Thomas More 3-1 and earning another appearance in the borough finals.
St. Francis de Sales drew tough competition in St. Francis of Assisi for the Queens CYO championship game. Without the benefit of playing Assisi in the season, St. Francis didn’t know what to expect.
St. Francis played an aggressive game and scored twice in the early moments of the game. Great ball control from forwards Casey Collins, Deirdre Ray and Deirdre Munday led to the early scores. Assisi countered with some offense of their own, but were denied by sweeper Meagan Reed and defenders Kiersten O’Grady, Shannon Toomey and Stephanie Tsamasiros. St. Francis scored three more times with strikes from Collins, Munday and Kara Ryan to give St. Francis an impressive 5-0 win. Both sides exhibited great sportsmanship in the Queens County CYO final.
The coaches would like to thank the girls for a wonderful season and all the parents for their help and support through the years.
